Buildtec Acoustics worked with Sacyr Somague to supply Highmat High Performance Acoustic Flooring to the new 66,000m² University of Ulster campus.
The project involved the installation of Highmat 50 under a 200mm screed in the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bio-Engineering Centre (NIBEC) laboratories.
These laboratories contained equipment and apparatus which was very sensitive to vibration. The client had specified a maximum vibration which could be accepted within the labs.
It was determined that controlling vibrations through the structure alone was not a practical approach and would present adverse implications on head heights, usability of the building and prohibitive costs. The design solution that was implemented consisted in designing additional means to control / isolate the vibration. The solution was the installation of Highmat 50 Acoustic Flooring under a floating screed within the laboratories and to isolate the transmission of structure borne vibrations resulting from adjacent equipment on the surrounding levels.Â
