TufSound Metal Acoustic Panels

TufSound Metal Acoustic Panels

Tufsound Metal Acoustic Panels are a decorative acoustic wall and ceiling treatment designed for use in architectural and industrial applications where there is a requirement to create a contemporary feel to a room. It is also suitable for use as tough, functional wall paneling in areas demanding a high level of impact resistance. Tufsound is designed to absorb airborne noise and reduce reverberation within a room to create a softer, more comfortable acoustic environment.

Tufsound P

Panels are manufactured from galvanised perforated steel with a sound absorbing mineral wool infill. The outer face of the mineral wool may be covered with black or white tissue to enhance the aesthetic appeal. Alternative facings can be used to prevent the ingress of fuel oil, lubricants and other substances. Perforated steel panels provide a higher level of impact resistance and a cleanable surface finish. They are available with varying open areas to optimise acoustic performance and a wide range of perforation patterns or slots. Further details available on request.

Tufsound M

Tufsound Metal Acoustic Panels are manufactured from expanded galvanised steel mesh with a sound absorbing mineral wool infill. The outer face of the mineral wool may be covered with either black or white tissue or a selection of coloured fabrics to enhance the aesthetic appeal. Alternative facings can be used to prevent the ingress of fuel oil, lubricants and other substances. The galvanised steel mesh is available in a range of sizes and panels are designed to resist mild levels of impact.

What is Sound Absorption?

TufSound Metal Acoustic Panels

Sound absorption is defined, as the incident sound that strikes a material that is not reflected back. An open window is an excellent absorber since the sounds passing through the open window are not reflected back. Conversely it makes a poor sound barrier. Painted concrete block is a good sound barrier but will reflect about 97% of the incident sound striking it. When a sound wave hits an acoustical material the sound wave causes the fibers or particles of the absorbing material to vibrate. This vibration causes tiny amounts of heat due to the friction and thus sound absorption is accomplished by way of energy to heat conversion. The more fibrous a material is the better the absorption; conversely denser materials are less absorptive.

Acoustic Performance of Tufsound

Thickness 125Hz 250Hz 500Hz 1000Hz 2000Hz 4000Hz
30mm 0.08 0.42 0.87 1.00 1.00 1.00
50mm 0.35 0.75 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00
75mm 0.50 0.81 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00
100mm 0.65 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00

The sound absorption coefficient indicates how much of the sound is absorbed in the actual material.
This absorption coefficient varies with the frequency of sound.

Installation

TufSound Panels On Walls
TufSound panels are designed to be fixed directly to the wall between top and bottom channels with concealed fixings. Alternatively, they can be spaced off the wall using timber battens as packers behind the top, bottom and end channels.

  • Cut the top, bottom and end channels to the required length.
  • Position and fix the deep top ‘U’ channel horizontally along the top of the wall with appropriate fixings.
  • Position and fix the shallow bottom ‘U’ channel horizontally along the bottom of the wall with the appropriate fixings taking care to ensure the distance between the top and bottom channels is 30mm greater than the size of the panel being installed.
  • If TufSound panels are being fitted to just one wall, fix the vertical end channels to fit between the front face of the top and bottom channels. Run a 25mm x 6mm flat self-adhesive strip along the length of the back edge of the top and bottom channels, to ensure the panels will be pushed towards the front of the channels.
  • Guide the top edge of the first TufSound panel into the top channel, push it against the wall and slowly slide the panel into the base channel.
  • Repeat until the wall area being treated is fully covered. If fitting to just one wall, push the first panel across into the vertical channel.
  • Repeat at the other end of the wall prior to installing the last panel.
  • For greater impact protection, TufSound panels can be pop rivetted to the top and bottom channels. Please note, these fixings will be visible.
  • To cover walls in excess of 3000mm high, install additional panels above the first row by fixing a shallow ‘U’ channel on top of the original top channel and install as detailed above until the required height is achieved.

TufSound Panels On Ceilings

  • When TufSound panels are being fitted onto ceilings, they should be fixed directly to the soffit using appropriate fixings to secure the top, bottom and end channels to the substrate.
  • The installation procedure is then as detailed above for the wall panels.
  • Panels should be securely fixed to the channels with pop rivets to prevent movement.
