Phonotrack Stretched Fabric Acoustic System

Phonotrack Stretched Fabric Acoustic System

Phonotrack Acoustic Stretched Fabric System is a highly decorative stretched fabric acoustic treatment for internal walls. The smooth, taut finish is created by framing new or existing walls with extruded PVC-U sections and bonding acoustically absorbent Melatech foam or mineral wool in between. Acoustically transparent fabric is then stretched across the infill and securely anchored into the sections.

Phonotrack is designed to provide sound absorption and significantly reduce reverberation within a room to create a soft, comfortable environment with a stylish designer elegance. High performance sound insulation barriers can be incorporated within the system to meet the most demanding performance requirements in specialist applications.

Four standard fabric ranges are available. Cara, Lucia CS, Lucia and Blazer Lite fabrics each have a different surface texture and are available in a wide choice of colours. Alternatively, clients can specify their own fabric subject to it being of a suitable quality, having the required acoustic properties and being compatible with the Phonotrack system.

The Phonotrack acoustic stretched fabric system allows total design flexibility on site and each installation can be customised to accommodate individual architectural features within a room. The PVC-U sections can be adjusted to facilitate the depth off the wall varying from 25mm to 100mm for a continuous finish around the room. Further details available on request.

What is Sound Absorption?

Phonotrak-Stetched-Fabric-Acoustic-Aborption-Custom-300x225

Sound absorption is defined, as the incident sound that strikes a material that is not reflected back. An open window is an excellent absorber since the sounds passing through the open window are not reflected back. Conversely it makes a poor sound barrier. Painted concrete block is a good sound barrier but will reflect about 97% of the incident sound striking it. When a sound wave hits an acoustical material the sound wave causes the fibers or particles of the absorbing material to vibrate. This vibration causes tiny amounts of heat due to the friction and thus sound absorption is accomplished by way of energy to heat conversion. The more fibrous a material is the better the absorption; conversely denser materials are less absorptive.

Acoustic Performance of Phonotrack

Phonotrack with Melatech Foam infill

Thickness 125Hz 250Hz 500Hz 1000Hz 2000Hz 4000Hz
25mm 0.12 0.34 0.73 0.92 0.94 0.87
50mm 0.20 0.66 0.99 1.00 0.97 0.95
100mm 0.55 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 0.97

The sound absorption coefficient indicates how much of the sound is absorbed in the actual material.
This absorption coefficient varies with the frequency of sound.

Installation

Method of fixing panels: 25mm thickness

  • Secure perimeter track using appropriate fixing at 150mm centres directly to the top, bottom and sides of the wall to create a frame.
  • Fix butt-joint track within the perimeter framework at centres 150mm less than the width of the fabric.
  • Pack out light switches, plugs and other penetrations with timber to form pattresses allowing for any electrical cables to pass behind and through them.
  • Cut infill material to abut the perimeter and butt track sections.
  • Apply mastic adhesive to the substrate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and bond the infill to the walls.
  • Cut fabric to length. Starting at one end, secure the fabric into the perimeter track using a curved faced spatula.
  • Stretch the fabric across the infill and secure into the butt-joint track.
  • Trim any excess fabric within 6 to 10mm of the joint and push the surplus fabric into the track.
  • Continue along the length of the walls until the area being treated is covered.
